How Many Hairs do Men and Women Lose on Average?
The hair loss is seen more in the case of women due to reasons like styling, heating, chemical treatments, and colours for hair. However, there is no means to measure the exact difference, but women lose approximately 40% more hair than men on a daily basis just because of the way they style them.
There are other reasons as well such as menopause and pregnancy which gravely contribute to hair fall in women.
Why Does Hair Fall Happen?
As already explained, it’s normal to lose about 100 hair per day but if you witness an increase in hair fall, it can be caused due to stress and health-related problems.
Some of the cases in which hair fall increases are:
- Pattern hair loss.
- Deficiencies are due to lack of nutrition.
Excessive use of chemicals, shampoos, brushing, heating, and hairstyling can also cause hair fall by damaging the hair follicles.
Our scalp has thousands of hair, each with a lifespan of 2 to 5 years. On a daily basis, each hair is at a different timespan of its life, some hair grows while some die due to reasons like stress, hygiene, nutrition, and styling, etc.
Our hair passes through various phases, the first phase is called Anagen phase in which the hair grows, 90% of your hair strands are in this phase at present. During this phase, hair grows around 1cm per month. When due to some reason, your hair stops growing, it’s called Anagen Effluvium or hair loss commonly.
The next or the second phase of hair life is called the Catagen phase, only 1 to 2% of your hair stays in this phase. This phase remains for 2 to 3 weeks and the hair stops growing during this time.
The third phase of hair life is called the Telogen phase and the hair in this phase is known as Club Hair. In this phase, the hair is at rest as they prepare to get separate from the scalp. About 8-9% of hair stays in this phase at any given time.
There is another term called Telogen Effluvium, during this period, 10% of your hair goes in the Telogen phase. The Telogen Effluvium is a temporary period, during which one can witness more hair fall, reasons such as stress, fever or surgery, etc. cause this condition.
The hair probably will get back to their normal form within 5-6 months.
How to Check if you are Losing Too Much Hair?
Whether you are losing too much hair or not can be determined by a simple test called “PullTest”. To do this test, section a small area of dry and clean hair then run your fingers through it and tug it gently on reaching the ends of the strands. If you get 4-5 hair stands in your hand after every tug then your hair is in either Telogen or Anagen Effluvium.
If you see more than 10 strands per 100 strands being tugged away then you should see a doctor and get this checked.

A doctor will be better able to tell you about the hair loss. It becomes crucial to see your doctor in the given cases:
